Organize ORGANIZE FOR WAGES AND SECURITY Every day the newspapers are filled with disturbing news for working men and women. Plant closings, wage reductions, increased costs of health care and downsizing have become a way of life for American working families. Just a few years ago, most of us went to work each morning. We knew that if we did a good job, and didn’t violate any work rules, our job would be there tomorrow. We knew that our wages and benefits were secure, and we knew that from year to year, our wages were likely to increase.
WE HAVE THE ANSWER In 1935 Congress passed the Wagner Act, more commonly known as the National Labor Relations Act. For the first time in America’s history, Unions became legal, and each worker was guaranteed the constitutional right to join a union and bargain collectively with their employer. When you join a union, your employer is legally bound to bargain in good faith over wages (including benefits), hours of work and working conditions. When you and your fellow employees become members of a union your employer no longer has exclusive rights to make any changes to your wages, hours and working conditions. Instead, he is legally obligated to bargain with you. You will have a collective bargaining agreement that will stipulate the terms and conditions of your employment. Your contract will spell out important things such as seniority, how much money you will be paid, how much, if anything you will pay for your health insurance, how much money your employer has to contribute to your retirement, as well as when and how much your next wage increase will be. Virtually every item that can be described as a working condition will be covered by your contract. The contract will also greatly increase your job security. It will require that your employer cannot discipline or discharge you without proving to the union that they have just cause.
